  • Fabric color
  • Leg color
  • Type of armrest

Does Burrow use recyclable materials?

Burrow's site states that they use sustainably sourced wood, chemical-free fabrics (free of formaldehyde, phenols, phthalates, heavy metals, and flame-retardants), and recycled packaging materials including 100% recycled cardboard boxes.

Are the fabrics stain-resistant? Kid-friendly? Pet-friendly?

You betcha! Whether you like to sip red wine on the sofa, have little ones that sometimes spill their fruit punch, or pets that like to sprawl out on the ottoman, you need not be afraid. Burrow extensively tests their products for durability, stain resistance, and pet scratch-ability to create furniture for real people and families with modern lives.

Built-in USB and charging ports?

Yes, there are built-in hidden USB charging ports on many of their sofas for your convenience

While their headquarters, ‘The Burrow Lounge’ in NYC, offers visits by appointment, they also partner with other showrooms in various states to let shoppers try their sofas out before the buy. Check here for one near you.

Can I test out Burrow before buying?

They offer a 30-day risk free trial and a 1-year limited warranty on parts and manufacturing. Return policy info is here

Other cool features:

Their couch cushions are reversible, so you can choose to either show the tufted or untufted side as you wish. Plus, get 5% off with these promo codes.

Pros:

  • Easy assembly to master with helpful how-to videos to assist
  • Sleek, modular designs allow for changes as you wish to make them
  • Prices are kept affordable by skipping showroom costs
  • Built-in plug-ins and USB ports are a nice touch of tech integration

Cons:

  • Limited selection of items and colors
  • Not the coziest cushions you'll ever sit on, but they work out all right (probably not for extended sleepovers)
  • Some had problems with shipping dates taking longer than expected
  • Some had difficulty with returns/communicating with customer service

Bottom line

If you can't fit much through your apartment door, and you foresee a few moves in your future, go with a Burrow sofa. They're easy to assemble, more affordable than some similar options, and you'll likely be satisfied with the product, based on existing reviews.

Article

With a globe-hopping CEO and a team of worldly visionaries in command, Article's contemporary furniture line arose from ideas shared during the group's recent Arctic travels.

Article offers more than just sofas — they also do tables, rugs, desks, lamps, pillows, and all types of bedroom furniture. But through all of that, the founders at Article pride themselves on creating products inspired by efficiency and simplicity.

Price:

  • Ottomans: $399
  • Love seats: $599
  • Sofas: $799 - 3899
  • Chairs: $49 - $1199

White-glove delivery/shipping info:

Article offers flat rate shipping on larger items, while small decor like lamps are sent by courier (no signature required). Larger furniture will be delivered according to the shipping option you select (see options here), which can include assembly if desired.

Most items ship to your door or ground level entrance to your building for $49. White-glove delivery is priced at $169, where a team brings the furniture into the room you desire and assembles it for you — but they do not take the packaging or your old sofa with them. Weekdays/weekends are not specified for delivery, but they will contact you as the date approaches to let you know a window of time during which delivery will occur.

Product lead time:

Many products will be in-stock at the time of purchase, however you can enter your zip code under each product (after clicking on its page) to see whether it's in stock, and how long it should take to deliver to your area.

Customization options:

You can choose from a multitude of colors offered for each sofa, and you'll also find suggestions for items that work well with your sofa in the same room.

Is Article eco-friendly?

While most of their products are flame retardant, their Mira and Alia outdoor collections are not — they state they are "working with manufacturing partners to have them removed." Article's products are all compliant with revised California technical bulletin TB-117-2013.

Does Article use recyclable materials?

They do not specifically mention this, no.

Are the fabrics stain-resistant? Kid-friendly? Pet-friendly?

While Article doesn't describe their fabrics as necessarily stain-resistant, they do note that some items are better than others at hiding stains and scratches. They recommend the Ceni and the Burrard sofas for households with children, and the Worthington, Alcott, Echo, Matrix, Nirvana, and Sven Charme Tan sofas for those with fur babies.

Built-in USB and charging ports?

No.

Physical showrooms:

No.

Can I test out Article before buying?

Article offers a 30-day no-questions-asked free trial for their sofas, and a 1-year warranty on defects and workmanship. See details here. Find Article discounts here.

Other cool features:

Lots of variety on products, and a fun selection to browse.

Pros:

  • Very affordable options compared to same quality elsewhere
  • Flat rate shipping fees
  • Large selection
  • Dimensions are provided so you can check the fit in your home (which you should definitely do; you’ll be charged a fee if they need to take it back due to not fitting through the door, etc.)
  • Customized colors to match your room

Cons:

  • Be cautious with cleaning supplies on the fabrics, and do ask for recommendations from the company if you don’t know what to use or you’re having an issue. They may not provide a replacement or refund if you use a product that they think may have damaged it.

Bottom Line:

Article sofas are worth a shot if they work for your price range! Most people have been happy with their Article purchases, and felt they were high quality and built to last. If you’re unhappy, there’s a 30-day return policy — as long as you don’t damage anything. Just be cautious with cleaning care.

Campaign Living

With a focus on seating — love seats, chairs, and sofas, to be exact — Campaign Living was inspired by 19th and 20th century British military "campaign furniture" which was easy to disassemble and so traveled with the soldiers.

Concerned with quality as much as mobility, the Campaign Living site emphasizes that movability need not be equated with 'disposability,' and their products are indeed meant to last a lifetime. Starting with a durable steel frame, Campaign follows with flame retardant-free polyurethane foam, removable and changeable sturdy fabric covers, topped with your choice of hardwood leg color.

Price:

  • Chairs: $595
  • Love seat: $995
  • Sofas: $1295
  • Pillows (including Vegan leather, velvet, & micro-velvet): $49 - $79
  • Replacement/extra cover sets: $245 - $445

White-glove delivery/shipping info:

Campaign Living doesn't offer white-glove delivery, but the packages are easy to maneuver up or down a narrow flight of stairs. Simple assembly is demonstrated in a video here (scroll down), as well as under each product they sell.

Product lead time:

Products are shipped once orders are processed. It typically takes items 5 -7 business days to reach your doorstep.

Customization options:

There are plenty of customization options at Campaign Living. Swap out the color of your fabric cover or wood legs on your furniture anytime. You can also choose from 3 types of weave for your fabric: flat, merino, and brushed. See how it looks on your favorite sofa online, or order a swatch to check it in person.

Is Campaign Living eco-friendly?

Products are not described as such, but their polyurethane foam is flame retardant, and all products are made in America with foreign and domestic parts

Does Campaign Living use recyclable materials?

Yes, all materials are 100% recyclable.

Are the fabrics stain-resistant? Kid-friendly? Pet-friendly?

Campaign Living sofas are considered pet-friendly (so likely also to be kid-friendly), as most fabrics repel liquids and are easily vacuumed. They also offer replaceable cover sets and legs if they get damaged.

Built-in USB and charging ports?

No.

Physical showrooms:

No, but they partner with several businesses (called ‘outposts’) in various states where you can see and try out their stuff. Check this locator to find one near you.

Can I test out Campaign Living before buying?

You can try your Campaign Living sofa for 14 days. If you don’t like it, return it to them in the original packaging for a full refund. Note: It actually needs to be back to them within that 14 days, so be sure to figure appropriate shipping time in as well.

Other cool features:

Sign up for their emails and get $50 off your first order. Financing is offered for the creditworthy through Affirm. Check for Campaign Living promo code here.

Pros:

  • Free shipping in UPS packaging
  • Lifetime guarantees on their frames
  • Covers in durable fabrics you can swap out anytime, vacuum easily, and that repel liquid
  • Easy assembly in about 15 minutes

Cons:

  • Tiny selection to choose from
  • No ottomans or pieces to go with the seating (but it’s said their catalog is going to be growing)
  • A bit on the pricey side compared to other online venues

Bottom Line:

Move over, IKEA. Campaign Living’s style and ease of assembly might be knocking you down a peg. If they were just the teeniest bit cheaper and had a few more items available, we’d have zero complaints (we still have very few).

Joybird

Joybird has a huge selection. They make the works, from numerous types of sofas and chairs to bedrooms sets, tables, shelving for all rooms, decor, fabric by the yard, and gift cards.

Your best bet is to catch a sale, and check prices on your desired products here.

White-glove delivery/shipping info:

Joybird offers white-glove delivery for a fee, here. This includes disposal of packaging for you — but not your old sofa. Their curbside delivery is cheaper and quicker (up to a week faster), although not available for all products. Weekend deliveries are not available at this time. Check their fit guide here to make sure your items will fit where you want them (and through the doors).

Product lead time:

Each piece is custom-made, so it takes about 4-8 weeks or longer, depending on the product. Shipping transit time may take an additional 7-14 business days.

Customization options:

Yes, fabric and leg color choices are available for many items.

Is Joybird eco-friendly?

Joybird's site states that their products contain no harsh chemicals and their fabrics are flame retardant-free. They try to purchase all their materials sustainably sourced within 100 miles of their workshop. And for each product sold, they commit to planting more trees than were used to create that product.

Does Joybird use recyclable materials?

This is not mentioned specifically.

Are the fabrics stain-resistant? Kid-friendly? Pet-friendly?

Yes to all. Several of their fabrics are stain-resistant, and they’ve made a handy guide featuring a video on the subject here. Look for their special logo to identify their most pet/kid-friendly fabrics as you browse. Want to try the fabrics out before you decide? You can request a free swatch kit to check them *all* out.

Built-in USB and charging ports?

No.

Physical showrooms:

No, but their products are featured at HOME in NYC, and they’re gearing up for a Joybird showroom to open in Brooklyn this summer.

Can I test out Joybird before buying?

Yes, they offer a *ONE YEAR* trial period. If returns are made within 14 days, you’ll get the full amount of your refund. After that, you’ll get the full amount minus return shipping costs. Lifetime warranties cover all frames, springs, joints, bases, legs, and hardware, and a 3-year warranty covers all fabric, leather, cushioning, seams, tufting, mattresses, stains, finishes, and mechanical mechanisms found in sleepers and recliners. Get more details on their Warranty page.

Other cool features:

Designers, architects, and business professionals may qualify for special rates. Financing is offered for creditworthy customers. They also offer free design services with no obligation to buy. You can usually find a code for $100 off your order, too.

Pros:

  • The one year trial period is pretty outstanding
  • Numerous (countless, even) fabrics to choose from
  • Multiple styles of each category available in a variety of colors

Cons:

  • Shipping times take a while; same with returns
  • You’ll lose the return shipping fees if returned after 14 days
  • A little expensive compared to some others of similar quality sold online

Bottom Line:

If you can catch a sale, this is ideal. The one-year warranty is tempting. Try to keep your decision within the initial 14 days if you can, but all you really lose are the shipping charges if it takes you longer to decide.

No.

IKEA

Everybody flocks to IKEA these days, and for good reason. The Swedish-born multinational group makes products for every room in the house, and has been the largest furniture retailer in the world since 2008.

Their chic, minimalist designs and easy-to-assemble packaging rivals none, and many products can be customized on color options and more.

Best of all, for our purposes, they offer delivery to your door. Let’s dive in on the details:

Price:

White-glove delivery/shipping info:

You should be able to get in-home assembly service through the IKEA Assembly TaskRabbit if you’ve made your order in the physical IKEA store, depending upon location and distance from your home. It does not appear to be offered online at this time. In-home assembly, when available, ranges from $89 - $779.

Some locations also offer ‘picking with delivery’ service (staff shopping for you and delivery to your door) starting at $59, as well as regular delivery starting at $29+, depending upon your home’s distance from the closest IKEA. Small item delivery is offered at a flat rate of $9. Next day delivery and same day delivery are offered as well, but may vary upon your location. Here is the full list of their delivery services. Deliveries are made Tuesday through Saturday.

Product lead time:

Unspecified, but you can see if they’re in stock at the closest store when you place your order.

Customization options:

You can select your cover color on sofas, chairs, etc., and size and style of bed bases and mattresses when ordering beds.

Is IKEA eco-friendly?

IKEA stores are eco-friendly and social justice conscious, starting with changing all lighting to energy-efficient LEDs, working on becoming 100% renewable energy powered and sourcing all of their cotton and wood from sustainable sources by 2020 (today, all wood is sourced in compliance with the IWAY Forest Standards). They've also installed solar panels on several of their California locations, supporting World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour to call attention to climate change action, and are raising money for UNICEF and Save the Children programs. Read more here.

Does IKEA use recyclable materials?

IKEA uses natural fibers and recycled materials whenever possible.

Are the fabrics stain-resistant? Kid-friendly? Pet-friendly?

This is not mentioned specifically, but care instructions are listed underneath each sofa (or other product) after you click on it, along with its exact dimensions and materials used in its construction

Built-in USB and charging ports?

IKEA has various types of furniture with USB chargers built-in.

Physical showrooms:

Numerous worldwide. Use this store locator to find one near you.

Can I test out IKEA furniture before buying?

Warranties vary with product and can be read about here. Refunds are possible within 365 days of purchase, with proof of purchase. Mattresses can be exchanged for a different mattress.

Other cool features:

IKEA offers lots more than just furniture. Check out one of their stores if you haven’t already! Plus, look for IKEA coupon codes here.

Pros:

  • Top level engineering and design
  • High quality products
  • Vast selection of products
  • Easy assembly (for the most part, some mixed reviews on this)

Cons:

  • If assembly will be done by a local company (most in-home assembly will be), check their reputability before purchasing
  • Some felt the ordering process in person at the local store took a long time
  • Be mindful of the distance to your nearest store. If you need to go back for something, it may be a heavy ride to make

Bottom Line:

If you’re handy, or you trust the local assemblers to put your product together, IKEA is a good gamble. Quality products come together well with skilled hands.

Lovesac

Lovesac offers two primary types of seating: Sactionals and Sacs.

Sactionals are essentially “seats” and “sides” that can be arranged and rearranged infinitely to create the type of seating you like best. See this video demonstration.

Then come the Sacs, which look a lot like sitting (or lying) in a cloud

Offered in six different sizes and several different covers and filled with proprietary “Durafoam,” we’re sure there’s one for every family in there.

Price:

  • Sacs: $350-$1300
  • Sactionals: $2000-$8000 for the recommended basic groupings

White-glove delivery/shipping info:

No, but they do offer free shipping.

Product lead time:

Products should be available ASAP, allowing time for customization. Most orders should take between 1 - 4 weeks.

Customization options:

For Sactionals, you can choose your:

  • Cover fabric
  • Arm type
  • Fill type: foam, down, or ‘Lovesoft’

For Sacs, you can select your cover — choose between several colors of faux “phur” or velvet.

Is Lovesac eco-friendly?

This is not mentioned specifically but the site does state that, “All Sac and Sactionals inserts meet the California fire rating TB117-2013 for home furnishings fire retardants, as displayed on the law label sewn into the inner liner that says "Do Not Remove."

Does Lovesac use recyclable materials?

This is not specifically mentioned, no.

Are the fabrics stain-resistant? Kid-friendly? Pet-friendly?

This is not specifically mentioned either, however each fabric has a description and care instructions in its product information, like this, indicating some are more resilient and stain-proof than others. You can also request up to 5 free fabric swatches to try them out before ordering.

Built-in USB and charging ports?

No.

Physical showrooms:

Yes, find one near you here.

Can I test out Lovesac before buying?

Eligible merchandise can be returned within 30 days of purchase. See details here. Hard insert pieces on Sactionals (clamps, seat/side frames, etc) are guaranteed for life, while soft insert pieces (seat cushions, covers, etc.) have a 3-year warranty. Sac inserts are guaranteed for life; covers have either 3 or 5 years warranty coverage. See further details here.

Other cool features:

Current and former military get an extra 5% off, and you can also get $50 off a purchase of over $250 with this promo code.

Pros:

  • Sactionals can shrink or grow based upon your family’s needs
  • Swap out covers to both the Sactionals and Sacs as you wish, wash them whenever you like
  • Super comfy - both types!
  • Some say the Sacs get even better/cozier over time

Cons:

  • Some didn’t get their delivery at the expected time
  • Some had difficulty with their Sactional assembly, so watch this demonstration and be sure you have in mind how you want to arrange your Sactional before you get started
  • Fabric swatches can’t really give you the experience of a fully covered couch. If you can get to a showroom and test out some different covers, you could experience how different they make your Sactional feel (some say there’s a huge difference between types, such as the ‘Royal Velvet’ and the ‘Chenille’)

Bottom Line:

If you’ve got somebody to help with the assembly and you don’t mind waiting for a delivery that might take longer than promised, these are ridiculously comfy and most adored theirs! If you can get a couple of different covers to try out how they feel, that would be the ideal experience.
